Studio Snyder Earns Top Award in National Design Competition
Community-Focused Design and Marketing Solution Fosters the Spirit of Voluntarism in Winning Canal Design Entry for Louisiana’s Jefferson Parish
NEW ORLEANS – May 18, 2011. In recognition of an innovative design solution for the West Esplanade Drainage Canal, Jefferson Parish has awarded first place and $30,000.00 to Studio Snyder and its teammates, Cadence and Poulos Brown. Studio Snyder, a full-service branding and marketing agency based in the Washington, DC area, promoted the team’s insightful land planning and funding solutions by creating an engaging visual identity that doubled as a powerful call to action.
“We are thrilled to have presented a well-rounded solution that will beautify and strengthen both the environment and the community,” said Studio Snyder President, Sarah Kate Snyder. “By uniting, Jefferson Parish residents, businesses, and organizations can transform this idle land into a valuable local amenity that everyone can enjoy.”
The award-winning team was led by Cadence, a planning and landscape architecture firm based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and included Studio Snyder as well as Poulos Brown, a civil engineering company based in Orlando, Florida. Following a one-day visioning workshop, the design team collaborated virtually for three months, culminating in their first place submission.
The team’s community-building solution featured an appealing marketing campaign, “Vive L’Esplanade” (Long Live the Esplanade). The socially conscious campaign was anchored by a colorful logo and carefully targeted marketing recommendations, including a robust social media element.
The comprehensive solution features a combination of entry-level steps to encourage immediate progress and long-term partnerships among businesses, residents, community organizations, and churches to accomplish more complex improvements. Fueled by six guiding principles, the design sought to beautify, repurpose, implement, define, grow, and engage the surrounding community with the project site. The competition is part of the Jefferson Parish Quality of Life effort to improve a 2.4 mile long stretch of canal surrounded by residential and commercial neighborhoods.
“It is personally rewarding to contribute to a project that transforms unused land into a lush gathering place,” said Snyder. “I hope that the continued enthusiasm of the Jefferson Parish community will bring these improvements to life.”
